Northern Maine Seasons
If I were to describe to you what it’s really like to live here in Northern Maine, I would first have to start with the seasons. We have all of them, and we all experience them. We may not all experience them in the same way, but they are truly one of the best parts about living here.
Each season brings its own beauty and new again activities, but also, its challenges. This keeps you waiting in anticipation for each one. But also, soon has you longing for it to be over, while you wait once again for the next season to arrive, and all the new beauty and new life that it will bring.
As each season arrives, it has been just long enough since you experienced it last, that you seem to have only fond memories and excitement for its coming arrival.
The changing seasons keep it interesting here, and always have you waiting for the next one. We are currently in mid-winter as I write this.
Our family enjoys winter a lot, or at least the first few months of it. Especially around Christmas time. This year the snow came late, so we’re still enjoying it and all the beauty and activities that come with
the snow and cold. One of my favorite scenes are the evergreens when they’re covered in sparkling blankets of white snow.
I love capturing the snow-covered trees from high up and looking down as you get to see them in ways you can’t from the ground. Perspective is everything and it makes real life feel a bit like a movie and like you’re seeing and experiencing it for the first time.
With summer, comes immense beauty, new life, longer days, and warm nights, but it also brings pesky black flies and mosquitos, that seem to want to balance all that beauty, with what can feel like a contrast of torment. That doesn’t stop us from getting out there and taking it all in while we can.
That brings us to Autumn, one of my favorite times of the year. The black flies and mosquitos begin to disappear, and the beautiful colors transform our towns and countryside.
The once overwhelming heat shifts to a faint chill almost overnight, and frost covered ground creates beautiful fog during perfect, sunlit mornings that still bring enough warmth for wearing only flannel and cozy sweaters.
It’s also harvest time, and anyone who plants a garden can appreciate that. It is also when the local farmers harvest their crops, like potatoes, broccoli, and grain to name a few.
A harvest sunrise with that brisk yet soft cleansing chill in the air, a warm coffee in hand, and a hot nourishing soup on the stove, is a whole mood of its own.
The time between autumn and winter brings shorter days, but also, cozier nights and the excitement of the holiday season. Beautiful lights will soon glow everywhere, shimmering brightest when accompanied by the beauty of the first few snow falls.
This time can feel magical with the kids, even as they get older. It’s another mood and feeling that’s truly hard to convey through words.
Soon though, as winter begins to feel like it has been with us for an eternity, we will long for the warmth of the sun that we haven’t felt in months and wish for spring.
With Spring, comes new life and new energy, but mostly a strong excitement for the coming summer.
…..and just like that, forgetting about the black flies, mosquitos, and the days that are so hot you can’t even enjoy being outside - we wait. We wait, and then we soak up the summer and the warm sun as much as we can, because we know that it won’t be here for long.
Early morning sunrises and warm, but cool enough nights, before the summer heat wave comes, are my favorite during summer. Memories of driving down our country backroads, taking in the sunrise, afternoon sun, and sunsets are ones that will stay with me forever and keep me calling this place home.
Soon though, the summer heat will be too much, and we will long for autumn once again…and the cycle will repeat.
If there is one tip though, that I could give you to fully experience northern Maine, if you ever come here or even if you live here now, it would be to go out in the early mornings before sunrise, and also at sunset and make sure to stick around for the blue hour.
There are many photos and videos that show Northern Maine, but none that I have found that truly capture how beautiful it is here during those times.
An introvert anyways, I like to be out most during these times, because you often have the places to yourself and that solitude, mixed with the magical light and what at least feels like fresher air, may just be my favorite feeling of all…..especially when experiencing it and sharing it with my children.
Thanks for reading!

I am new to this, and this is my first blog post and video, but I’ve already begun working on a second that I hope to share very soon. I’ve also been working on a few other things that have been in the works for a while, more to come on that in a later post.
This shift is something that I’ve felt pulled towards for a while, but starting is the hardest. I plan to share a mix of everything, from reflections, stories, current events, to small glimpses into our small town everyday life here in northern Maine. I love photographing and filming our real experiences as a family, as well as creating inspirational films, capturing nature, and talking about everything that inspires me; God, philosophy, nature, home, nutrition, health, DIY, homeschool life, and all things creative.
While this is all new territory for me, I’m excited to see where this will go, and it feels right. I am definitely an introvert and keep to myself most of the time these days, but I do have a lot to say and share.
Every time life does find me in good company - I actually realize how much I really do want to say, and how much I want to connect with like minded people. I hope people will enjoy my videos & blog posts and walk away from each with some value, even if just in the form of encouragement, warm feelings, or inspiration. ♥
